"HEARTS" BEATEN AT ELLAND ROAD

Hat Trick Accomplished by Wainscoat

For the second week in succession the sport-loving people of Leeds and the neighbourhood in large numbers were attracted to Elland Road to watch football played for the honour of the game alone. Having an off-day, owing to Bolton Wanderers being engaged in the Cup semi-final, Leeds United met and defeated Heart of Midlothian by four clear goals before about 16,000 spectators. Possibly owing to the Scottish eleven not arriving in Leeds until shortly before the kick-off, the players were not able to do themselves justice, and United had rather an easy task. The home half backs were so much masters of the game in the first half that Potts, the goalkeeper, only had one shot to stop. By contrast with their opponents, United were a great team. They played as if League points were at stake, and following the opening goal at the end of twenty minutes' play the result was never in doubt. Keetley was almost through for a goal a minute after the kick-off, but the centre-forward had to wait twenty minutes before getting in a successful shot from near the penalty line. Six minutes after Wainscoat put United further in front, and followed with another goal two minutes later. Leeds commenced the second half with a lead of three goals, and as the Scots put a little more determination into their play United battled unsuccessfully for thirty-one minutes before Wainscoat completed the "hat trick".
